On August 17th, 2024, the Dicta Care Initiative team embarked on a deeply impactful mission to an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Abuja, Nigeria. In a world where displacement often leads to isolation and despair, we aimed to shine a light on the often-overlooked issue of mental health, providing support and spreading love to those in need.

A Day of Connection and Care

From the moment we arrived at the camp, we were greeted with warm smiles and open hearts. The resilience of the camp residents, despite the hardships they face, was both inspiring and humbling. This outreach was not just another event on our calendar; it was a testament to our ongoing commitment to making a tangible difference in the lives of those who need it most.

One-on-One Counseling Sessions: A Safe Space for Healing

Mental health challenges are universal, but for those living in displacement, these challenges are often magnified. Our outreach included personalized one-on-one counseling sessions, where our dedicated team of mental health professionals, including Blessing, a psychologist, and Dr. Sam, provided a safe and confidential environment for residents to share their struggles.

Each session was tailored to the individual, addressing issues ranging from anxiety and depression to trauma and grief. These private conversations provided a much-needed outlet for emotions that are too often bottled up. The goal was not just to listen but to empower each person with coping strategies, reassurance, and a sense of hope for the future.

We witnessed powerful moments during these sessions—tears of release, expressions of gratitude, and, most importantly, the beginning of a journey toward mental well-being. The trust the residents placed in us was a privilege, and we left each session with a renewed commitment to continue supporting their mental health journey.

Spreading Love Through Generosity: Food Distribution

While mental health was the focus of the day, we also recognized the importance of addressing immediate physical needs. In keeping with our motto, “Spreading Love,” we organized the distribution of essential food supplies to the camp residents. The packages included staple items like rice, beans, and cooking oil, which would help sustain the families for days to come.

As we handed out the food packages, we were met with expressions of joy and relief. These moments of connection reinforced our belief that acts of kindness, no matter how small, can have a profound impact on those who receive them. It was a powerful reminder that care for the mind and body must go hand in hand.

Interactive Q&A Session: Building Awareness and Dispelling Myths

Following the counseling sessions and food distribution, we gathered the residents for a general Q&A session focused on mental health. This interactive session was designed to engage the entire community, offering them the chance to ask questions, share their thoughts, and learn more about mental health and well-being.

We discussed common mental health issues, the importance of seeking help, and ways to support one another in the community. Myths and misconceptions about mental health were addressed head-on, helping to reduce the stigma that often surrounds these conversations. The residents were eager to learn and participated actively, making the session not just informative but also deeply meaningful.

One of the most memorable moments of the day was when a young mother asked about how she could help her child cope with the stress of their situation. It was a poignant reminder that mental health impacts everyone, regardless of age, and that our efforts must extend to the most vulnerable members of the community.

Capturing the Moments: A Day to Remember

The day was filled with moments of connection, understanding, and shared humanity. Our team captured these moments in videos and photographs, which tell a story far beyond words. The images show the faces of those who participated—faces marked by resilience, hope, and gratitude.

These visual memories are not just for us to keep but to share with the world, spreading awareness of the challenges faced by displaced persons and the importance of mental health support. We hope that by sharing these moments, we can inspire others to join us in our mission.

Looking Forward: Continuing the Journey

Our work at the IDP camp on August 17th was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. The challenges faced by displaced persons are immense, but through love, care, and support, we can make a difference, one person at a time. This outreach was just one step in our ongoing journey, and we remain committed to returning to the camp and continuing our work in other communities.

As we look to the future, we invite you to join us in our mission. Whether through volunteering, donations, or simply spreading the word, your support helps us continue to empower minds, uplift spirits, and spread love wherever it is needed.

Thank you for being a part of this journey with us.
