On July 20th, in celebration of World Chess Day, Dicta Care Initiative embarked on a mission to bring the timeless game of chess to the children at an IDP camp in Abuja. Our goal was not just to teach them the rules and strategies of chess, but to inspire them, nurture their strategic thinking, and bring smiles to their faces.
Inspiring Minds Through Strategy and Smiles
The day began with an interactive chess lesson, where the children eagerly absorbed the fundamentals of the game. Our expert chess players, whom we specially recruited for this event, guided the children through the basic moves, explaining the roles of each piece, from pawns to kings.
A Friendly Competition
After the lessons, we organized a chess competition to put their newfound skills to the test. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and anticipation as the children battled it out on the chessboards. The competition was fierce, but in the end, three winners emerged:
- First Place: Umar Musa
- Second Place: Susan Abraham
- Third Place: Sadia Garba
Celebrating the Champions
All winners were celebrated and awarded prizes for their excellent performance. Umar Musa, who secured the first position, was given a special prize along with a brand new chess board to encourage him to continue honing his skills. The joy and pride on the faces of the winners were truly heartwarming.
Sharing Refreshments and Joy
To round off the day, we shared refreshments with all the participants, creating a festive atmosphere. It was a day filled with learning, laughter, and the joy of community.
Special Thanks
We extend our heartfelt thanks to our expert chess players for their invaluable contribution to making this outreach a success. Their dedication and passion for teaching chess were instrumental in inspiring these young minds.
